The Malaysian Prime Minister’s Economy Division is the arm of the PM’s Office that is tasked with coordinating and advising on the economic agenda of the Malaysian Prime Minister.
The day-to-day operations include coordinating with relevant Ministries to address pressing issues that are affecting the country, engaging with business leaders to be in the know of the latest ongoings of the business world, and executing research to propose policy recommendations.
As Director, the latest role taken up by the Economic Department is to coordinate the yearly budget with the Ministry of Finance. In the latest Malaysia Budget, some of the policies tabled were the ‘JaminKerja’ program with the main aim of guaranteeing over 600,000 jobs and a Micro-financing providing loans from government institutions with no interest and 12 month instalment relief.
As of late, the economic department has recommended policy actions to address the rising cost of living and inflationary pressures. In May, the government increased the minimum wage from RM1200 to RM1500. A step taken after various consultations with relevant authorities.
